Hate the can. Anyway … classic, hazed lemon colored pour with a decent head. The head is a little light in terms of density, but delivers some great lace. The lace redeems things a lot.
As this warms there is some really lovely, fruity acidity that builds. Elements of tangerine and softer, pitted fruits, maybe even a little peach. There’s some lemonade elements in there too, and a touch of drying spiciness in the back-end but not a lot. It’s definitely ginger based for me, and a nice touch. It feels even lighter than the 4.8%, and that adds to the drinkability.
For my money this is definitely not a classic Wit, and therefore by definition it is never going to be one of the better in the style, but it is drinkable and it is fairly clean. Light and easy, it doesn’t really challenge you in the way than some in the style can do. Having said that i kinda like it. There’s some decent depth here which can be an issue with some wits, but not this.
Kasteel Wit doesn’t feel like a typical Van Honesbrouch beer to me, and i think that’s an OK thing.
