Well, here we are with the continued, and the latest expansion of the Hopslam brand.
$8 for 16 oz at Curly’s Village Inn, Fort Wayne, IN. For context, Curly’s is a lovely, local Dive bar (I mean that in the most positive and affectionate way), and that gives context to the pour size and the price.
This is a great looking beer. The body is as one would expect, but the head was superb. A dense, highly retained bone-white cream that persists and leaves plenty of lace. Ice-cream like, reminiscent of the best Orval efforts.
There is not a huge amount of citrus here, mostly the beer is very sweet with some light, citrus bitterness sitting on top of the Hopslam base. The additions are orange and grapefruit but the take-away is without doubt the sweetness; that and the drinkability.
This feels like a beer that at 10% could get a lot of people in a lot of trouble! The body is smooth, and sugared, breakfast grapefruit halves comes to mind, but there isn’t really any underlying grapefruit sourness. This is a very sweetened citrus experience, not a more aggressive, tart one. There’s light pine running throughout the beer as you would expect, and this ultimately doesn’t feel that different to the base beer, maybe a touch fresher and a little more zing.
The beer is ridiculously easy to drink, and seems to remove the honey element of the original. No effort is required to drink 2/3 of a pint, and remember this is clocking in at 10%.
