Dogfish and I have a long, and fairly complicated relationship going back 20+ years. In short, they have been, at various points, an utterly essential brewery to the US scene. That has changed quite dramtically in the last decade, but it also means that I will happily give them the benefit of the doubt. They’ve earned that.
Lemon colored, hazed pour with a wispy, high head. Lace is great, retention less so – it’s very, very weak – no substance. Nose is that of hoppy water. It’s always, always the same with these beers. Hop water without substance in the nose, that often carries through to the flavor. No fun.
IMO low ABV beer generally needs to be malt based to give the presence and body required to hold them up, Almost without exception, American, hop forward, low ABV beers smell and taste like hop-infused water and they are non-starters for me. This is no exception. It’s not its light nature which is the issue here, it’s the way that the hops permeate everything and end up providing what mounts to a “tea” steeped with hops.
Not good, as expected.
