#9 in a series that has not been easily available in the US, or via shipping beer in from Belgium directly. These beers have been experimental series since 2014, taking on various guises with various collaborators and in various styles. #9 is a base De La Senne beer (not sure which one yet) with a Cantillon lambic blended in (also not sure which).
Light, honey colored body, good head, some, moderately sticky lace with some retention.
Nose has some amazing farmyard funk that also promises some level of acidity. On the first few mouthfuls, and as the palate adapts, the beer is much more tart that one might anticipate – even with the Cantillon influence. However, as the palate adjusts further, and as the beer warms a little, the tartness backs off somewhat to leave a subtle, amazingly delicious, and eminently drinkable, funky Saison. (I have included the Tripel style in the database here, simply because the label has the words “Triple Saison”).
Wave after wave of deliciously bracing, light champagne-like funk, all held together with the usual De La Senne skill. For me, this beer is more like a Bière de Champagne than some Bière de Champagnes, and the vinous, dry ending cements that feeling. Full of white grape and white wine notes, the beer’s carbonation is perfect (a De La Senne hallmark of course), and it breaks over the tongue again and again, delivering each second it’s in the mouth.
The skill that De La Senne brings over and over again is quite remarkable, and this beer is another triumph.
