A beautiful, strong, copper colored body underneath a quite fine array of bubbles forming the head, Some nice lace – it’s sticky.
Some light to mid-level fruit in the nose.
Plenty of fruit in the tastes too, and the beer drinks like a “dark estery mix” if you can imagine that. Alcohol is light at first, but as the beer warms there is a feeling that it gets more significant. A light burn even develops as I get further down the bottle. The beer never feels especially ‘wintery’ though, and it lacks much spice despite the addition of cinnamon. As such, this might be better characterized (or at least better thought of) as a light-bodied, Belgian Strong Dark. It’s thinner than a Quad or BSDA, but it has the alcohol and warmth, and has plenty of Belgian candy and ester/yeast character.
Definitely that’s closer to the classic quads rather than the much especially wintery, but all in all that’s not a bad thing.
Worth a look, and a little out of the ordinary so I’m glad to have tried it.
