Unexpected four pack purchase about a month ago, this is the final 12 oz bottle. A multi-grain beer with barley, wheat, oats and rye.
Impressive pour, with a high, rocky ice-cream like head, and a lightly hazed, amber body that seems to have some depth. Some pleasing lace. Nose has significant yeast.
Tastes are malt based, quite sweet, but with a lovely, yeasty tempered feel. Good definition, and a clean edge characterize the brew. The beer is round and sweet, but still light enough to be very drinkable. Nice, biscuity finish and a bit of a English feel about the beer as whole. There are a few buttered toast elements that add to that feel.
Creamy, rich mouthfeel which is great, and arguably the best feature of the beer – really strong. Obviously the oats are playing a major role here.
It’s very moreish (a great sign) and makes no mention of the rye element until a tiny, peppery bite in the finish, but to be honest that pepper bite could just as easily be a saison yeast element.
This is a very strong effort, even by Ommegang’s high standards. A rich beer considering the modest alcohol (by American standards), that brings a strong yeast element that one would not necessarily think that would come with a beer of this style.
