This beer pours a lot less dark than some photographs suggest, with a lightly hazed orange body below a the usual, impressive wispy head. Some lace, moderate retention.
There are quite a lot of band-aid phenols upfront in the nose, and more pertinently in the initial tastes. This backs off a little to give a sweeter experience ultimately. A little acidity amongst the phenols, but they are still quite strong. There’s an underlying, simple, mildly tart note that runs throughout the beer.
Some light funky barnyard elements, and a yeast backbone in the beer. How the oats (ľavoine) manifest themselves I’m not quite sure, but that’s usually via an enhanced mouthfeel. This beer certainly feels a bit deeper than a 4.8% beer sometimes might. Nice, (larger than expected) bittering finish.
Very typically Fantôme, and a good beer to introduce someone who is not familiar with Dany to definitely give a feel for his mercurial style, but would also not scare the inexperienced off. A Fantôme starter beer if you will.
