Additional notes (10/20/24) – pictured.
Big, sweet hops are the order of the day with Guldenberg, and this bottle is no exception. Is this a Tripel? Well, it’s forever cast as one but the De Ranke hop element is just absolutely impossibly to shake, and as such this is always pushed to the perimeter of the style for me. Alcohol is gentle, considering, and the mouthfeel matches that subtle element.
Drinks a little like a sweeter, less bitter Père Nöel which seems like a logical place for this to sit.
Every time that I drink this I always think that this is a “Tripel” that only De Ranke would brew – fitting then! Not classically within the style for me, but classically delicious for De Ranke. A welcome beer every time that I drink it.
Original notes 09/09/07
11.2 oz bottle, notched best before Jan ’09. Green’s, Buford, Atlanta, GA, USA.
Very cloudy orange pour into the Brasserie des Rocs chalice. Not much head, little lace. Quite a lot of debris in the bottom of the glass once the beer has settled.
Sweet, but light bodied Tripel. Frankly lacks depth. Some yeast character but not much. Residual sweetness again, but rather light.
A bit disappointed, I expect more from this stable.
