Lovely head, but it fades pretty fast. That’s OK at this ABV.
Nose has plenty of clean alcohol, and it’s mildly solvent based.
This beer is quite a mixture. Sweet and caramel based, followed by a much more acidic back-end with some additional fruit. I wouldn’t call it muddled exactly, but there is a lot going on. I think I liked this a bit more in the earlier vintages. There’s definitely more acid based fruit, that one might not necessarily expect for something that is ostensively a Belgian Dark. The caramel backs off quite a lot, and this becomes more of a pseudo Belgian fruit experience with a high ABV.
Honestly I don’t think I enjoyed this as much as the original but it’s hard to tell. So much water has passed under the bridge since then that it makes meaningful comparisons hard. The 14 year old original was stunning!
