De Dolle Extra Export Stout

De Dolle Extra Export Stout

11.2 oz bottle. Into the Westmalle chalice it goes. This is at least two years old, but to be honest it's impossible to tell the real age; could be even older. Quite a lot of sediment from the dregs of the bottle and a large amount of yeasty, marmite debris around the top of the bottle and underneath the cap. Body is dark, dark brown approaching opaque. Creamy mocha head with a nice spotty film on the surface of the beer. Nose gives a slightly acidic, lactose like whiff. Mouthfeel is a little...

De Dolle Bos Keun

De Dolle
Bos Keun

Additional notes 05/20/23 (Pictured) Same rocky he'd, but this time no gusher. Cap says MAR2024 - this is a Best Before date. ABV is now quoted on the label as 9% rather than the original report 10. Still plenty of syrupy goodness, white pepper and Belgian yeast. The retention and lace are excellent. This is much more drinkable to me these days compared to my notes below. Still some orangey, bitter pithy notes. Original notes 10/13/08 $4.99, Green's on Ponce, Atlanta, GA, USA. 330 mL bottle....

De Dolle Dulle Teve (Mad Bitch)

De Dolle Dulle Teve (Mad Bitch)

Additional notes 05/13/23 (Pictured) Bottle - Belgian Style Ales. Golden body, perfect head. Classic sweet Tripel with an excellent alcohol edge and clean lines. Perfect example of the style with white pepper and spice at an appropriate level. Some fruit but the cleanliness of the beer is its signature. Original notes 11/03/07 On tap at the Brick Store, Decatur, GA, USA. Small serving in a goblet/wine glass. Appearance is a lemon/mustard yellow, clouded with a small ring of head and lace that...

De Dolle Oerbier

De Dolle
Oerbier

Updated notes 12/03/22 (pictured): Oerbier continues to impress and give a "big" BSDA. Plenty of fruit and depth, and the alcohol seems bigger and more present than it has has previously. I always think of Oerbier as an outlier in the style, and a beer with its own unique character with that odd, tart note that persists. The acidity that I first noted (below) 15 years ago is more pronounced for me these days as my palate has changed and evolved. Some people love that, and although I really...

De Dolle Extra Export Stout

De Dolle Oerbier Special Reserva 2005

330mL single bottle, Greens, Buford Highway, Atlanta, GA, USA. I dunno, I guess it's the style but this doesn't do much for me. Dirty dishwater (Dubbel) appearance, scant carbonation and a decent head, but it fades quickly (ABV?). A little lacing but not much. Plenty of sinus clearing acid in the aroma and the repetition is there in the taste. Highly acidic rather than sour and to me very little other character. Reminds me very much of a rough scrumpy West Country cider without the charm. The...

De Dolle Arabier

De Dolle Arabier

Notes added 06/26/2022 (pictured) Still bitterish (see notes below) but I have an infinitely deeper appreciation of this beer a couple of decades forward. Pretty golden body with a competition of sweet and bitter that add up to a very distinct beer. There’s a lot of fruit that starts off as grapefruit but soon cuts across the palate in a much sweeter finish. Clean, tasty and now a favorite despite the notes below. Original notes 09/13/2006 Poured into the Duvel tulip there is an enormous...

De Dolle Stille Nacht

De Dolle Stille Nacht

Notes added 09/12/21 (pictured) It’s SO hard to pin this beer down for me. An alcohol bomb, but so full of flavor; the color of a mid-point pale and dark; the unexpected pour when looking at the label (for some reason I associate the artwork with a stout - maybe the Export Stout has a hold on me). It’s rich, it’s big, and it’s great. It’s a beer that hides nothing and comes across as being exactly what it is. On the downside that’s absolutely ‘no more’, but on the upside it’s ‘no less’. A...
