Thanks go out to @lnashsig for the opportunity to get stuck into another Freetail beer. 22 oz bottle from the ‘Barrel Aged Series’. I don’t know that I care for the idea of a ‘wood-aged’ Berliner Weisse, but I suppose that it may not matter – it doesn’t.
The pour is pretty much spot on for the style. The washed out, slightly hazed lemon body comes with a briefly fizzy head. Obviously no retention or lace to speak of.
Nose is not more than some light, sinus clearing citrus carbonation.
The requisite, watery, lightly tart acidity is the basis of the style of course, but the initial tastes seem much more aggressive than subsequent ones. There’s a couple of things to not here, firstly the beer settles into a very mild sourness very quickly, and secondly there really is no hint of any wood-aging for me. I think that’s a good thing, since what would/could/should, wood bring to the table here, anyway?
In the final analysis a very nice example of the style, generally unremarkable but I am always happy to encounter beers that hit style markers. One knock might be the ABV which although relatively modest, is still quite high by style standards.
