White Birch Brewing Belgian Style Pale Ale

Bottled: Feb 2013, 6.5% ABV, 22 oz bomber.

Purchased from Total Wine, this might be another of their ‘TW only’ exclusive distributions arrangements. What IS the law regarding that?

I remember when WB launched a few years ago with a prominent BA (Bill Herlicka) being at the helm. A lot of very mixed reviews since, I think, with some scathing criticisms of their beer not being unknown.

Hazy light golden pour, but a really nice head with good retention and lace.

Some authentic Belgian yeast notes in the note, with a little smelly barnyard (not funk, more ‘organic’ in its feel).

A little acid on the tongue perhaps with some apple and pear notes in the mix. A slight acid based, eatery feel to the beer. Quite sharp.

Definite Belgian notes, but lacks the sweetness of some in the style. Finishes quickly and relatively dry.

Look, not the greatest, but something I would perhaps try again. Some promise, it least it feels ‘Belgian’ at the beginning, however, as it drinks the Belgian yeast element fades and a simple American hop character starts to comes through. Less interesting longer in the glass and by the last third of the bottle quite ordinary. Soupy looking appearance at the end, too.

This started out quite OK, and then downhill rapidly. By the end, I was drain-pouring. Odd that it should change dramatically down the bottle.
