Bizarre story here.
At 7 AM on a random weekday at the end of July 2026, I read that Adrian Tierney-Jones had written a story in Pellicle magazine about the 30th Anniversary of the brewing of this beer. I honestly had never heard of TipoPils, and I have never (not once) seen it in the USA. At 10 AM that same day I’m in a store in Madison, Wisconsin, and there it is, on a shelf right in front of me, bold as brass – absolutely weird.
Hazy, mid-orange, honey colored body with a great head. Head is wispy, and leaves some nice lace and it has some good retention.
Nose is pretty bready, and doesn’t really offer the promise of the dry-hopping that I was hoping for.
Tastes are not especially bitter, but there is a hop presence. It does feel dry-hopped without a doubt, but to be honest the beer doesn’t scream the brightness I was expecting. It’s a little grassy, but not very strongly headed in that direction. Mid-palate, back-end and after taste are all quite dry.
Of course, this bottle is not dated, so there’s that, but it also doesn’t feel at all oxidized or old. Hmmm.
In the end I was a little underwhelmed if I am honest. Would I try it again? Sure. Am I convinced that Italian Pilsners (Pilseners) should even be a ‘thing’? Nah.
