Sweetwater Dank Tank The Gimp

Pour is a mid to dark brown, thinnish looking beer. The head is initially better than expected, but drops away to give almost no head apart from a thin film.

Nose offers some light caramel notes and some fairly feint alcohol.

Given the 10.3% ABV, I was expecting a much more aggressive beer. Of course, the Old Ale sttle is not necessarily an especially aggressice beer, and this one is somewhat in keeping with that note.

Some sweet toffee and caramel visits early, and there is a twang of alcohol but it never feels especially hot. For such a high ABV beer, it seems fairly subtle. Of course, this is all relative and there is no doubt that there is plenty of heat around the place, but it’s not the murderous beer that it could be. The beer is fairly sweet and smooth, and for the ABV and the style is quite simple.

Obviously the alcohol burns down the bottle, but even toward the end it never builds to the heat that one might have thought. Also surprisingly, the beers sweetness (which is undeniable) never really gets syrupy or cloying. Fairly odd.

Even though the hop profile is low (good) it still rears its head a little more than one would expect in a similar, English version of the style. It definitely has some characteristics that are in line with the classic American example of the style, Old Stock, and in that way I think I would call it both a success and authentic. The fact that I am not really especially keen on it is a different matter.
