St. Louis Fond Tradition
Gueuze Lambic

375 mL bottle, black foiled and capped.

Lovely color with a copper, clear bond underneath a foamy, wispy head. Obviously an aggressive pour was required, and it’s gone quickly, No lace, no retention.

Nose gives a light ethanoic acid whiff and a slightly phenolic, band-aid element that I’m not sure should be there!

Tastes are not quite as acidic as the nose would suggest, but are also quite dry. The chlorophenol is replaced with a woodiness that again I was not anticipating. Tartness is as one would expect for a beer in this style.

I’m really not sure if this phenol note is supposed to be there, and I see that others have reported in going back a number of years. That suggests to me that it’s not a flaw per se, but a recurring component of the beer. That seems odd.

Mouthfeel is light and drinkable.

Slight weird because it’s hard to get away from the plastic-like note.
