Goodness me, this is a beautiful beer.
A tremendous head, with great retention and lace on a beer with such a huge ABV, all sitting atop a dark brown body. There’s a real presence about the pour, not only in terms of the head and color, but also in terms of the “glugging” viscosity.
Huge fruit, raisin and alcohol notes are there. Now, in and of itself there’s nothing especially unusual about that for a beer of this type, and in many respects one might say, “so what?”, but this hits differently than many other similar beers. Here we get truly, truly significant depth, with dates, figs, prunes and alcohol soaked Christmas fruits. Obviously this isn’t a Christmas beer per se, but my gosh you would be hard pressed to simply drink it and say that it wasn’t a contender for such a classification. The real difference here is the depth; an absolutely devastating beer in terms of its presence – and I’ve had a few BSDAs and Quads in my time.
Warming alcohol (of course), but again it hits perfectly. There’s a tiny bit of acidity in the far back end that only adds to the experience. It lingers and has a huge presence without be bruising. A classic ‘iron fist in a velvet glove’ beer.
