St. Bernardus
75th Anniversary

Bottle No: 1845 (out of 11,000)

Never thought I would get a chance to try this, as very little probably made it to the USA and it sold out online pretty quickly too.

This is not a gentle Tripel. It’s aggressive, and has a drying, warming feel about it that makes it feel like a special beer. In that regard I think that St. Bernardus has achieved what they set out to do. Every bit of the 8.7% feels like it’s there, which is another way of saying that it feels well over 8.7, and more like a double-figure ABV beer.

I’ve been led to believe (by someone that should know) that there is a best before date of Nov 30th 2023. Now obviously that has little meaning at this stage, but I wonder why it’s been set at that – it seems extremely early to me.

Great , golden pour as one would expect, with head and lace to match. Looks super.

White pepper, light pear and pineapple among the other soft fruit esters. Those dance on the tongue as one would expect, and the beer brings plenty of alcohol infused depth. Classic Tripel? Somewhat, but there also a certain je ne sais quoi about this beer that makes it special. Fruits linger as does the alcohol, this beer hits hard and often.

Delightful and large but never bruising. Cracking beer, well made and it earns that 75th Anniversary designation for me.
