Schwendl
Festbock

That truly beautiful, bright lemon colored body that you’ll usually get from a Weizenbock, with the requisite high head. The head is a little bubbly rather than fluffy. As a result, retention and lace about average, possibly a little less than, so nothing too great in those departments.

Nose has some acidity to it. Quite fruity. Almost has some cider notes(!), even a touch – the merest touch – of funk to my nose (not my strongest sense it has to be said).

Light drinking mouthfeel, nothing too heavy which on one had is good because it makes the beer drinkable and easy, but on the other is about one or two notches below what I would expect in a Weizenbock. That can go either way, since it leads to an easier drinking beer, but a slightly less satisfying one as well.

Being labeled a “Festbock” I didn’t really know what to expect. Is this a Festbier? Is it a Weizenbock as advertised? Well, it’s a bit of a hybrid in my eyes. It has all of the features of a Weizenbock but it (slightly) lacks the massive ABV punch and banana/clove torrent. Now, let’s be VERY clear, this has all of those elements, but it seems (very slightly) muted, especially in the mouthfeel. Not quite as bold and rich as some Weizenbocks can be.

This is a fine drinking beer, but if you’re looking for a high ABV, bruising Weizenbock, this isn’t that. It has all of the elements, but they are brought together in a slightly more subtle way. In one way that works well, in another it makes for an experience that some might consider a touch underwhelming. I’m happily in the former group, glad of a easier drinking Weizenbock for a nice change of pace. I still love a bruiser though! I suggest grabbing a bottle and making up your own mind!
