San Francisco Porter
3.90 out of 5.00 | Good

American Porter on the label, for me there are distinct Belgian Stout notes.

Black looking body in poorer, unnatural light, this is distinctly more dirty brown in better, natural light. Head is rocky and wispy and tannish in color.

Very authentic nose. Plenty of mid to strong roastiness.

Tastes offer a dryish, lightly bitter experience that feels quite thin. Mouthfeel is no more than average here, even a touch lower. There’s a really strong depth of “light” bitterness here that feels very American in one way, but the package adds up to more of a Belgian Stout for me. Maybe it’s the yeast (I have no idea what yeast is used here BTW). Mid-palate sets things up for the back-end with some burned character and a touch of drying acidity.

The finish is long and true, with a presence that suggests a bigger beer.

Like all De Ranke beers this feels well-made and crafted. Really nice, if a tad-thin, this is a beer that’s well worth a visit if you have any interest in either the quoted style or Belgian stouts. Unsurprised that De Ranke does a very solid job here, after all, it’s what they do.
