Piraat 7 SEVEN Belgian Golden Ale
4.13 out of 5.00 | Very Good

Well this is interesting.

Firstly I wish this wan’t canned. Overlooking that, I get to the beer. A light golden body, with some impressive head. Retention is OK, but lace is above average. The lightness of the color gets repeated in the tastes as the beer drinks very, very easily. Mouthfeel is lively but light.

Obviously this is a beer that by Van Steenberge standards is a little smaller than many of their offerings. It gives an absolutely enormous, solventy ester nose and initial taste but at the same time it is not at all ‘big’ of cloying. No extra sweetness here – a ‘dry’ Tripel?? I know that’s a paradox, and perhaps something that you wouldn’t ever anticipate, but to be honest that  the best description I can come up with.

The initial tastes suggest that you might be getting into a huge beer with all of the usual EtOH soaked fruits (mostly pineapple) and aggressive alcohol, but that fades almost instantaneously. There is a very light hop kiss in the back-end and finish, which is certainly not large, but also definitely noticeable and certainly surprising.
