Ovila Abbey Quad

Expensive presentation. Corked & caged in the thick, 12.7 oz bottle. Purchased as a single, I want nothing to do with a four-pack.

Mahogany pour with a decent little head and some persistent lace and small collar.

Nose is a raisin based one, and to be honest not as plummy as I was hoping. The tastes follow suit.

Obviously a boat load of alcohol up front here, but it seems to be in check – at least for the style. I don’t get the plum and dark fruit and fig notes that I was expecting, although the beer does have a fruit element and is smooth. I was looking for a much rounder, bulbous fruit note but it never comes through.

As the beer warms there are some slightly pear based esters, perhaps some bubblegum, but the recurring theme for me is the lack of significant, serious depth. This beer, when fully considering the style, actually feels a touch thin in the mouth. I suppose one could argue that the relatively light mouthfeel adds to the drinkability, and that would be true, but I’m not especially interested in the ‘drinkability’ of a 10.2% Quad!. I need it to hit the dark fruit notes HARD, and lave me satisfied. Ovila Abbey Quad has me wanting some more substantial.

Raisins come again in the middle and end, as does a little more warming alcohol. There’s a richness lacking here. Something that would coat the tongue or feel heavy is missing, and the beer feels a little too solvent like for my money. Some alcohol legs in the glass suggest that this beer could have done so much more. Where are the plums? the Belgian yeast really never makes its presence felt, either.

Meh, maybe a opportunity missed, maybe a beer that just isn’t quite up to par, but either way a Quad that would sit a long way dow n the list of beers that I can get in the style.

Far too lightweight for the style, and a slightly watery disappointment when all is said and done
