Old Golden Hen

I’m suspicious of English Golden Ales in the extreme, since they never really existed as far as I am concerned, and they are (I suspect) no more than dumbed down ales for the lager crowd.

Anyway.

Attractive golden pour with a fading head with a touch of lace – not much. Nose and states are mild biscuit malts and a touch of bitterness in the background.

Fairly bland if I’m honest, but certainly refreshing as the label suggests.

It does have a few redeeming attributes; drinkability, a smooth, easy going nature, some biscuit aroma and taste, but it lacks depth and it’s not something I would ever hold up as a a quintessential, English beer. Having said all of that, I’d love to try it on cask.
