Meerts Tilquin Au Pinot Gris 20-21
3.58 out of 5.00 | Good

375 mL bottle, corked & caged with the lavender colored cap on the cage (not always the case).

Modest pop on opening, and carbonation is mid to low. A little head that lingers to give a film and even some lace – quite surprising TBH. Lightly hazed, golden body. Pretty color.

Nose has light vinegar, but I don’t get much fruit.

Tastes are quite dry upfront which feels a little like the tannins from the grape skins rather than any underlying, base lambic notes. Finish has mild puckering ability. As is always the case with such beers, as it warms and as the palate adjusts it becomes more approachable and easier on the senses. There’s perhaps a touch of must about the beer but it’s not large.

Finishes with a surprising grapefruit-like note – I wasn’t expecting that – which is bracing.

I’ll have to taste the other Tilquin Meerts in the series to make a determination of the differences that all of the different finishes give, but right now in this single example the Pinot Gris isn’t really bring a lot of distinct character to the beer.
