L’HEURE d’ÉTÉ

Is this a Bière de Garde, A French Bière de Garde, A Saison/Farmhouse or a Bière de Mars? Does it matter? Maybe yes, maybe no, it might depend on the mood I’m in, but there’s no doubt about the fact that it offers a lovely funk, and a few of the earthy qualities that one associates with a good BdG.

Modest pop on opening the capped 750 mL. The beer pours with a decent head but initially also feels slightly under-carbonated. Some light lace and retention is also modest. Mid-golden color. After some further consideration, the carbonation seems more appropriate and fears are quelled.

Some very nice, strong horse-blanket, wet dog, and funk on the nose. Smells way bigger than it ought to. Really good.

Tastes reflect the nose, and the beer feels like it has presence. It drinks bigger than the ABV, but not in terms of the alcohol, rather in terms of the flavor profile. Very nice balance of light drinkability with a mid-palate and back end that offers some lovely, moderate bitterness and a subtly drying finish. Funk is present all the way through, and the beer is beautifully balanced.

This reminds me of many of the best made English beers, where a light touch still comes with a ton of flavor and is skillfully made.

Bought this on a whim as an addition to a recent Etre order, and absolutely delighted that I did, What a super little beer.

Bottled 01/2026, BB 01/2029.
