Leffe Radieuse

Leffe is much maligned. I’ve always liked/enjoyed/loved their beer. Partly nostalgia? Sure. But I simply don’t drink beer that I don’t enjoy, so shoot me!

Radieuse is a pretty beer. A beautifully clear, red-chestnut body with an acceptable, if not great head. Nose offers a ton of malt, and this comes through in the initial tastes. The alcohol blends beautifully with the malt and creates a rich, but highly, highly drinkable beer. A touch of solvent (which is OK), the beer bites lightly and gives a warming, full malt, slightly boozy experience.

This is obviously not a classic, Belgian Strong Dark. It’s far lighter in terms of drinkability, and has far more subtle fruit as opposed to the heavy, dark plums and raisins that one normally associates with the style. It almosthas the feel of fruit beer, with a lot of clarity and drinkability, but a solid malt backbone with some bright alcohol.

A combination of malty bitterness, alcohol sweetness and warmth, and a light fruit note, all come together to make a beer that really satisfies.

I like this beer, you probably don’t.
