Kasteel
Tripel

An old acquaintance, never formally noted on the site, about 20 years overdue! Classic golden, utterly clear body, with a resplendent, bone-white ice-cream like head. Perfect appearance, the etched Kasteel glass works beautifully here. Head retention enhanced by it.

Nose offers more ‘normal’ Tripel character than the tastes do for me. Nose has white pepper and clean lines, whilst the tastes have a maltier, less well-defined edge at least in terms of classic Tripels for me. There’s a decent dollop of alcohol here too which of course one does associate with the style, but it seems a touch heavy in presence here even when considering that. Banana esters are there, but they are a touch flabby. Lacks drying spice for me, and lacks some of the more subtle esters and back-end drying notes that one might hope for. There’s some honey here too, with some artificial sweetener too – less appealing.

I don’t dislike this beer per se, but in no way is this either my favorite Tripel, or even what I would call a classic Tripel. It’s too sweet for my tastes within the style, and a little flabby and too poorly defined for me.
