If I’m honest this is definitely not a beer that I would ever reach for, but I also have a mantra of trying almost anything once. Additionally Kasteel and Van Honsebrouck have enough equity with me to allow me to not exactly give them the benefit of the doubt, but to at least apply that mantra to this can (uggghhh …).

Pour is excellent. Lovely, creamy head, with great retention and lace, atop of well-defined, black body. Not complaints there, head definitely has a smooth feel.

Nose offers some significant chocolate.

There’s quite a lot going on here. Chocolate is definitely there, as is a little cocoa, some coffee, a lot of sweetness, some milky lactose elements are the main players. The alcohol kicks in a little mid-palate, and beer finishes drier than you might expect. As it warms the milk chocolate elements leas in hard – definitely milk! Alcohol is nowhere to be seen, at lest not at an 11% level.

Is this a Belgian Quad? Well, not really in any traditional sense of the word. I bet lots of people will really like it because it is chocolate forward and sweet. For me it’s just too much. I don’t much care for chocolate or coffee forward beers these days (or much ever), and this is too non-beer like for me.
