Well, out of the gate this looks like a quad and not like a typical Dubbel – GOOD! So many Dubbels present as an ugly, dishwater, murky brown mess. Taking a dump in a glass would something that look better half the time. Not here. The garnet read, clear body is attractive and suggests good things.
There’ a lot of dark fruit here. Some raisins and a ton of alcoholic malt. Good, plummy notes and plenty of residual sweetness. Very clean, lots of fruit and a dry finish. Everything is here, including a warming alcohol element that feels bigger than 7% to me. It’s a little raw, but for me that’s a plus. I like the way it delivers without pretense, and doesn’t step-around what it is.
A solid beer even if it is a touch thin, and one that might develop with age but it’s a nice base to start from. Hopefully this beer will change over time both in the bottle and in the hands of the brewer. Lots of potential here.
