Imperial Amber
35th Anniversary

Disclaimer: I don’t generally care for bourbon barrel beers .. read on.

Had this on draft a few months ago and didn’t hate it (as I thought I might), so when I saw a single bottle I thought why not? Let’s write some more formal notes.

Pour is quite a pretty, garnet red. Head is pretty decent for 12.1% beer. No complaints on the appearance.

Nose is all bourbon barrel, and given that I’m not a huge fan of such it doesn’t necessary set me up well, but …

… the tastes are simply an incredibly tempered, easy going version of the same. No harsh bourbon notes, and the whole thing is incredibly mellow. A lot of oak, but this is SO light for a 12.1%, barreled beer. It must be the lager element, or just luck in terms of how it came together. Either way it’s insanely drinkable, and frankly the anthesis of a barrel aged beer.

It’s definitely paradoxical, but this beer is the barrel-aged beer that I can cope with.
