Holsten
Maibock

If I’m honest I didn’t know that this beer even existed. Pils? Yes. This? No (Also see this).

500mL can purchased at the LCBO in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Brought back to the USA. Judging by the reviews on beeradvocate this isn’t available in the USA and is strictly a Canadian thing as far as North America goes.

Standard golden clarity on the pour with initially a decent, highish, white head. Retention and lace aren’t great. The nose offers a very straightforward, malty light skunk. Pretty standard.

Tastes are simple grassy malts, some residual sweetness, accompanied by a very, very slight slickness in the mouth It’s got that simple bread, with nothing surprising here, It lacks what I would call an ‘edge’. A bit flabby, and not especially dialed in for the style.

Mmm … delighted to have tried it since I didn’t know this existed, but at the same time it’s hardly a classic. It’s a style I generally like, but this seems a little poorly defined, and has some characteristics of a cheap, macro lager to me. The light skunk, the slickness, the lack of much hop character, no defining bitterness.
