Grand Réserve 17
(2016)

Picked up on the recent mercy mission to Pine Knob Wine Shoppe In Clarkston, MI, to release old beer into the wild. A no-brainer at $14.99, with a BB date of 08-12-21. This is one of three or four bottles from the $200+ worth of old beer that I bought, that I had supreme confidence would be OK. Let’s see if I that confidence was well placed. For reference, here is the review of the 2011 version of this beer.

Pop is encouraging with removal of the cork and cage. Head looks great (dense and generous) on top of the blackish body. With more light, the beer gives a delightful, reddish, garnet, chestnut brown pour. It really looks spectacular.

Nose offers a LOT of sherry based alcohol. At first I thought I detected a touch of oxidation, but then the alcohol kicks up again. It could be that the beer is slightly oxidized but TBH the alcohol and the dark fruits drown it out completely. You might think any oxidation would still be an issue but really it isn’t because the taste profile of the beer is so incredibly strong, so incredibly dense and rich, that it wins on every gulp and every sip.

Speaking of the dark fruits and alcohol, that IS this beer. Raisins mainly, and then plums and plenty of estery, marzipan (almond) based alcohol. This beer is EXACTLY as I expected, and as I had hoped, it’s still magnificent.

Having said all of that I’d still drink this sooner rather than later. Firstly why not? Secondly I wouldn’t want any underlying oxidation to start to creep in – I suppose it could.

In summary I KNEW this would be good, and it turned out to be magnificent. I’m not remotely surprised TBH. A great beer that was literally built to withstand this kind of time, Unibroue are one of the best in the world in this slice of the style market.

A triumph then, a triumph now.
