Gouden Carolus
D’Or

Undated bottle from a recent mercy trip to Michigan to release some ancient bottles into the wild. This could be anywhere from the early 00s to approx. 2012. Purchased in early 2024, this could be 20 years old.

Expecting nothing, purely experimental.

Corked has no date, is slightly “stubby” and the removal reveals zero pop. Carbonation is essentially zero.

Pour gives a turbid brown. Nose offers some sweet malts. Tastes are a simple, watery malt base with some light sherry notes. Body is thin.

No idea what this was like x years ago, but the answer is likely spectacular. Elements of that initial skill still present even if this is silly in terms of rating and ‘reviewing’. In fact, just notes here for me for posterity, and if something younger ever comes along. A little oxidation but not severe. Still sweet with a dryish finish, and all of the plum, raisin and light sugary elements that one would expect are lingering in the background.

Damn. I just get sad over beers like this, what I’ve missed is all that I can think of.
