You just never, ever, ever know with Dany.
It’s really tempting to say that this is one of my favorite Fantômes of all time, BUT since it’s also one of the least Fantôme-like beers that I have ever had, it seems like there’s something horribly wrong about that statement! I feel unfaithful.
To put things quickly into perspective, and to give you the information that you need, this is a sweet, alcohol bomb which feels so very atypical of Fantôme. Nose gives away a little alcohol then waves of sticky fruit follow in the tastes. It’s on the edge of feeling a little syrupy, but it manages to fend that off – just.
The fruit here is big, as is a lightly drying, warming, alcoholic finish. This is definitely Tripel-like, and there really isn’t any hint of Dany’s usual phenolic notes, any funk or horse manure, and no herbal Cinzano Bianco. In those respects this is so not a quintessential Fantôme beer for me.
Think “Tripel” and I think you’ll be delighted, but think quirky tyical Fantôme and you may even be as far as “disappointed” – I wasn’t
