Label has (what I assume is) the original brewing date of Friday and Saturday 14-15 August 2020 changed to 13-14 August 21, and the 24 asterisked. My guess would be because of COVID changes to the production occurred.
Having had a bad experience with Sante 23! I’m a little wary. Of course, these beers are so individual, that perhaps there’s no point in even thinking about that, but I guess it’s just natural to wonder.
Opens with an encouraging pop, and the pour really is something special. A high, ice-cream, rocky head, with, in the light, a bright orange body that looks amazing (the picture is taken inside that makes the beer appear a lot darker than it really was in the glass). Great lace. Looks stunning.
A lemon-shandy type mose which is attractive, and does not give away any of the bitterness that is about to come.
A lovely herbal bitterness, with good alcohol and a great does of sweet malts all converge. There are times when you think this is going to drink like an American DIPA, and to be honest in the final analysis it does, BUT with all of the herbal craziness that one expects from Dany. There’s a bunch of different threads that run through this beer, and are each undeniable in their unique presence. Certain lemony, citrus elements, a profound bitterness, a malt based American DIPA, and that typical Cinzano Bianco herbal (unmistakable) Fantôme signature. It reminds me of Macaquincoing melded with an old-school, West Coast brewed DIPA.
In the back-end, the merging of those things is quite extraordinary, and then it is cemented with some light alcohol burn experience.
Gosh this is so good. Absolutely amazingly complex, especially considering my somewhat muted expectations. Multi-layered, and you can pick each one out, but in addition the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. What a beer!
