Erdinger Weißbier
Dunkel

16.9oz bottle, Gay’s Hops and Schnapps, Angola, IN, USA.

I had assumed that because of the store that this was purchased in that it would likely be an older bottle, however, no, BB 07-2024. Delighted. Poured into the impossibly thin and slender Erdinger 0.3L glass, the dark brown pour offers more in the appearance than some others in the style, looking quite substantial and even resplendent. An excellent start.

Pour is fantastically carbonated, head is well retained and leaves some lace. Lack of lace sticking knocks it down a half point, but this is one fine looking beer.

I’m a little tempted to say that this is slightly atypical for the style, with more body and more depth of flavor. However, it’s not very “creamy” as some descriptors suggest for the style.

Nose and tastes are standard with some cloves. Banana elements are light but enough, as is the bubblegum. Highly drinkable and never thin, the beer body is also never huge. Alcohol (for me) is a little above the advertised 5.3%. Malt dominates (obviously), and it feels more substantial than some in the style.

I like this better than many other Dunkels. It seems somehow more present than some, and a little less thin. Happy with it.
