Duvel
Single Fermented

I guess that there are two ways to look at this.

Firstly, if you take it for what it is, then it’s not bad (even if I think it’s a little too hop forward even for a Belgian Pale or Blonde). However, if you start comparing it to Duvel – which IMO is simultaneousoly inevitable AND unfair – then it’s going to be a disappointment. Am I supposed to compare this to that? Of course not, they are different beers, but I’m sat here thinking, “Well. I wish this were a Duvel”.

Light, straw colored pour with a fluffy but thinnish, bubbly head. Color is pretty. Foam fades quickly to give some residual lace on the glass.

Nose offer a light, hoppy note with some Belgian candy/esters, with the former being a bit bigger than I would like, and the latter being a little muted.

Tastes follow the nose, and finish surprisingly dry. This feels a touch “IPAesque” (believe it or not), and the hop element, although never big per se, seems just too prominent for what we are dealing with here. This of course is a least in part to the Citra dry-hopping which “corrupts” everything for me. There’s a little onion in there, and some alcohol that pokes through, and the beer is drinkable enough, but the aftertaste is also too hop forward for me.

There are plenty of Belgian notes around he edges here, but this almost feels a bit too ‘American’. Light hops, the can … meh, I’m annoyed.

Let’s be clear, this is not a ‘hoppy beer’ per se, but the hop element comes through a bit too much for my liking, and a little too much for what I was expecting from the style, The fact that it is ‘not Duvel’ is something that I have to get over, and is not particularly relevant to a discussion of this beer as an entity, but in another way it is absolutely inevitable when drinking it. As I say that isn’t fair, but it can barely be helped.
