Great color (mid-brown with some garnet highlights) and an usually attractive pour for a Dubbel. Lovely light-yellow colored head. Lace is decent, and like the Quad, the film on the surface of the beer is impressive.
Nose offers a little alcohol and plenty of the basic, cracker based malts that one would expect.
The bready malts continue into the tastes and there’s a slightly acidic fruit note about it. Maybe some cherrywood, maybe a little gentle raspberry. I’m not talking about a taste of fruit, rather the light acidity that might come with some cherries or soft woodland fruits. A touch of caramel in the back-end, but that’s really just the simple malt base shining through. It’s unusually clean for a Dubbel, and drinks very easily. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, as it should be, and the beer presents as a really nicely rounded package.
A good take on a style that I’m never in love with, this beer does a pretty good job of replicating something authentically Belgian. This brewery does some very nice work in that regard.
