Bottled 29th Jan 2022.
I’ve had this beer maybe a dozen times before this review. It’s hard for me to understand why I don’t have any notes on it. I love it.
Rather than describing the smell, tastes and individual aspects of the beer, I always feel that Jan de Lichte is best described as a whole. This is a beer that is truly more than a sum of its parts. It’s a lightly acidic, full, pillowy experience that’s soft in the mouth but delivers a great lemon/citrus/fruit alcohol punch. SO satisfying and beautifully brewed, every time I drink this it feels like an event.
Appearance gives a hazy, golden body and a great head. Some lace and above average retention, but not the best lace I have ever seen. Nose gives light banana, and some estery pineapple.
Tastes replicate some of the nose, but there is some extra citrus in there. For me, the alcohol always drinks well above the advertised 7.0%. The beer leaves a little stinging acidity in the aftertaste along with some residual alcohol. Again, it feels above the 7.0. I know some people refer to this is an ‘Imperial Wit’, and I can see why, but this is not bruising, rather it’s delicate but strong. There’s a great, drying fruit note that finishes the beer amongst the alcohol.
Delicious, a great beer.
