Reddish brown body (depending on the light) with the expected relatively scant head and absence of any lace and retention. Having said that, there is a light film collar around the edge of the glass.
Nose gives a gentle ethanoic acid note but it’s not sinus clearing like some.
There is absolutely no doubt that the red wine barrels have a major influence here. Plenty of drying tannins among the expected balsamic vinegar notes. The tastes hold on to those flavors. Quite a lot of drying wood here, and I like something that is a little less astringent, even when considering the style.
For me, the key to Flanders Oud Bruins is temperature. I keep them as cold as all others then I wait for it to come up to almost room temperature, when it’s there I take notes. Some can be sweeter than this, giving a sweet and sour experience, and that’s what I generally prefer.
