Cantillon
Classic Gueuze

Another beer that it’s hard to believe that there aren’t any formal notes for on the site prior to now. A ‘classic’ that I’ve drunk umpteen times before.

375mL corked & caged. 2023 Vintage, bottled June 2023, basically it’s a year old.

Beautiful orange pour with a lovely head that is surprisingly well maintained. I’ve drunk this beer a decent amount over the course of 20 odd years and I never recall a head this well formed or well retained. Maybe this is a bottle that is much younger than I’ve had in the past.

Nose has that classic, woody, corky, Cantillon acidity.

Tastes are exactly as anticipated with no harsh edges, and a lack of aggression. Apples and citric acid are there, as is a splash of peach juice. I always expect the beer to be more prickly in the mouth but it never is. Smooth. More light acid runs through the beer. How I have come to delight in beers like this, that I initially found too harsh for me. Unsurprisingly, Cantillon represents an evolution for me – I’m hardly in the minority.

Classic, simple Gueuze beers are my favorite sours usually, and what better place to turn than this timeless classic in name and in application?
