Bronze King
3.50 out of 5.00 | Good

22 oz bottle, $5.99 (maybe $6.99) from Total Wine, Barrett Parkway, Marietta, GA, USA.

Apparently this is an English Barleywine (according to beeradvocate), but to be honest, you can never quite trust that moniker in the USA. This is backed up by untappd calling it an American Barleywine, Harpoon calling it a just a ‘Barleywine’ that is, ‘A hearty take on an English style’. Chinook and Tettnang.

Pour is an unspectacular drab brown, but that’s not really all that important. Spotty, coffee colored head – all very appropriate.

The nose has some sweetness associated with the English version, but this is not carried forward to much into the tastes.

Nice light toffee and maltiness comes through. There’s a slight, ethanol vapor that forms in the mouth, but strangely for these solvent notes, it’s really not that harsh. Warming, but not harsh.

The finish is a bit drier and a bit hopper than the English version of the style, but at the same time nowhere NEAR as biting as many American Barleywines.

Ultimately this really quite mild, but just not anywhere sweet enough to get into English Barleywine territory.
