Allagash Saison
4.08 out of 5.00 | Very Good

Last of the four pack, so I had a good run at taking some notes and forming an opinion.

Initial pour is of that of a Wit. After that, when we add the bottle conditioned yeast as I like to do, we get closer to a beer that looks a little more like I thought it might.

Nose is more yeasty than the tastes initially suggest but they build in time.

The initial appearance actually gives away some of the tastes. A fuller-bodied Wit comes to mind at first, but without the side notes. There are plenty of sharper, less sweet citrus notes, perhaps a little grapefruit zest. Obviously this is not a citrus beer either, but it’s definitely NOT your quintessential Saison either.

It seems livelier, sharper and more tangy than a typical Saison, and the beer strikes its own course.

High carbonation and some once retention, it’s a nice beer to engage the eye, and it has a high drinkability. Finishes quite dry as the label suggests and by the last third of the 12 oz the test is beginning to make a more aggressive appearance.

Allagash has earned my respect, dollars and attention over the years, and this is simply another very well made beer, even if it whys away from your classic Saison. I would say enter with an open mind, do not expect quintessential Saison, and you’ll likely be happy.

Quintessential Saison? Nope. Well made, highly drinkable beer? Yes. Yeast notes build on unsweetened backdrop.
