Beer Review: Weyerbacher Brewing Co., Sixteen

Jun 29, 2011

Ding Points: 81.00

Pour: 80.00, Nose: 80.00, Palate: 80.00, Mouth: 90.00, Global: 80.00

Tasting Notes:

Obviously a relatively unusual style, especially in the form of an anniversary beer, but nonetheless a welcome one.

Darker than expected pour with a nice beige head. Small retention but some really nice creamy stuff is left on the surface of the beer – good, spotty, thin film sits as a temptation for what is below. Mahogany color, but on the dark end of that particular spectrum.

Nose offers little more than some strong, sweet alcohol, but I suppose that is entirely appropriate.

In the taste the honey element is VERY apparent, very quickly. certainly a lot of sweetness, but the beer is more complex than that and offers a range of experiences. Very malty and a touch of a floral element around the beer. Light bitterness plays with the smoky honey. The honey sweetness definitely builds toward the end of the beer in quite a big way, finally getting a little much at the end of the 12 oz bottle.

Smooth in the mouth with plenty of silkiness in the finish. Rolls in and out pretty easily and the mouthfeel is definitely a big plus on this one. Honey has the effect of giving the beer a fuller feel that perhaps the body alone would normally do. As a result of that and the sweetness, this beer seems pretty rich. It may have been better consumed in some colder months.

Not a beer that I would want more than one of, but as a change of pace and something slightly different, this is a nice touch.

Other: 12 oz bottle from Hop City, Atlanta, GA, USA.

Any thoughts of adding a few stats/categories about the beer (Brewery, Name of Beer, Intended Style, ABV, etc) to the top of your review, for reference? I see that you have this listed under braggot on your categories on the bottom, but until then didn’t know what Weyerbacher was calling it.

Paul – Great idea! I have a whole bunch of other ideas (like the ones you mention), but only so much time! :-(. Gotta keep playing the lottery so I can dream of going full-time! Cheers.
